Shipping Container Locking Systems: What you need to know

Last Updated on February 13, 2025

Containers are used for various purposes such as storage, shipping and site-based applications and as such security is extremely important. This is where the lockbox and padlock come in.

What Is a Lockbox on a Shipping Container?

A lockbox is a steel shroud section that is welded to the plate where the container doors join. It has a top, front and sides and is open at the bottom so that the padlock can be placed up underneath and onto a D-ring situated inside. The fitting of a lockbox makes it much harder to tamper with the padlock to try and force entry to the container.

Key Features of the Lockbox

The lockbox is made from high-tensile reinforced steel, which is welded to the container. It is painted with marine paint as is the container itself and is weather-resistant. A rectangular-shaped padlock is then fitted inside the lockbox, securing your goods safely.

Benefits of the Lockbox for Security

The lockbox is fitted on new/one-trip containers as standard, providing a layer of protection against theft or vandalism, and along with the secure padlock gives you peace of mind when securing your goods inside. There is an additional cost to fit the lockbox onto a second-hand container; however, it is very simple to do at the time of purchase.

We fit lockboxes as standard to all our rental containers for your peace of mind.

Why a Secure Lockbox Matters When Renting or Buying a Shipping Container

Is a lockbox worth the investment? Yes, absolutely; containers can be locked on the locking bars that run down the back of the container doors using a U-shaped padlock, but it will be in full view and removing a padlock from this location with bolt croppers would be simple.

Fitting a lockbox and padlock is an inexpensive way to deter any would-be thieves from trying to break into the container. It is particularly advisable if you are storing goods on a long-term basis or in areas with a higher theft risk.
