Charity 2020/21/22

Jane, Matt & Clare have been really busy over the last 10 years and as part of Billie Box’s business policy they have been supporting various charities in the local area and further afield.

2020-22 has seen a huge number of Covid cases, which has been a worrying time for many Worldwide households.

2022 Russia went to war with Ukraine. Oh my goodness what an awful time for the Ukrainian people. So with this thought Jane, Matt and Clare decided to donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee. Let’s hope that this donation goes a little to helping.

2022 Billie Box continues to support Youth Sailing at Felixstowe Ferry. Let’s hope the youngsters can get out and enjoy all the River Deben and the sea nearby.

2021 Matt decided to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats in aid of the St. Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich. Billie Box sponsored him. Such a great challenge, well done Matt for doing it. We know it was a tough one!

With Covid-19 causing such mayhem, Jane, Matt & Clare realised that many people have been struggling as well as the Charities.

So at the start of the Pandemic, Jane was writing postcards of encouragement to the elderly on a weekly basis via Age UK Suffolk. Sadly, Age UK suffolk shut their doors in 2020, which meant the postcards would not be forwarded to the people that needed them. Jane then decided to support a Care home in Felixstowe by writing to their residents, giving them, hopefully, a little smile on a monthly basis.  This month Jane and Matt thought that a gift of a colouring book and pencils might be fun, so with the help of Woodbridge Emporium, Jane delivered them.

In 2020 Jane and Matt had seen that many low income families were really struggling to make ends meet. Billie Box’s friend Darrell Smith of Archway Carpets is an ambassador for Home Start Suffolk. A charity that supports local families with food deliveries, mental health and general support. So throughout 2020 Jane was shopping for food and delivering to Darrell for distribution.

Jo Revitt of Papworth Trust is another friend of Billie Box’s. Papworth Trust help and support their disabled clients with a range of high quality services such as housing, workshops and getting jobs. Jane and Matt have supported this charity on and off throughout the years. This particular support is to raise funds for a garden studio to be used as part of the Day centre.

Jane and Matt realised that 2021 was going to be an even more difficult time for those that are waiting for operations and treatment for illnesses that are not Covid-19. So this month Billie Box donated to the Blossom Appeal (breast cancer) run by the local Colchester & Ipswich Hospital Charity

These charities are just a few, but Billie Box has also supported the following:

For as long as Billie Box can, they will support local charity.

Billie Box sponsors FFSC safety boat

Billie Box is sponsoring the Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club (FFSC) Safety boat named: Carl Giles. Yes that’s right Carl Giles OBE, the world famous Cartoonist!

safety boat, FFSC, rescue, sailing club, Billie Box sponsors, sponsorship, Carl Giles

Carl Giles safety boat at FFSC

But why Carl Giles? Carl Giles was the President of the FFSC from 1984 to 1995.

FFSC own the second largest collection of Carl Giles cartoons and many of the characters in the cartoons were members of the club. The largest collection is owned by the Daily Express, which is the newspaper Carl used to work for.

FFSC is based at Felixstowe Ferry, Suffolk, at the mouth of the River Deben. The racing is very challenging both in the river and out to sea. Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club has a large Youth sailing section who sail on Saturday mornings. The club also offers RYA sailing training. The club racing turns out a good fleet. There is a yacht cruising section and many social events on offer. The FFSC also hosts many sailing Open meetings, National championships and even the occasional World championships.

Jane Billing of Billie Box has been a member of FFSC since 1966, in fact she was born in Deben Week (1 week’s sailing on the River Deben, which no longer runs). Jane’s father sailed with the White family in Firefly dinghies during the 1960’s and Jane followed in her father’s footsteps and started sailing Mirror dinghies in the 1970’s.

Jane, with the help of her father, won the ‘Ladies cup’ at Felixstowe in 1978 And that same year won the ‘Ladies cup’ with Andrew Johnson at Waldringfield. Later on, Jane became social secretary of FFSC and successfully raised funds for FFSC through various social events. Jane sailed Lark dinghies around that time.

In 1994 Jane, on behalf of FFSC, worked alongside the East Suffolk Waterski Club to fundraise for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). That year, with the help of the FFSC and ESWSC members they raised £1,700 for the RNLI. Also helped by Red Arrows flypast, Warren Mitchell (friend of Carl Giles) and Griff Rhys Jones making an appearance. Every year FFSC fund raise in aid of RNLI.

Over the last 52 years Jane has been part of the FFSC and has many family and friends there.
Nowadays, Jane helps out in the Crow’s nest on a Wednesday night sailing race night. The crow’s nest is where races are started and finished. Jane also helps with the various sailing Open meetings,National and any World championships that FFSC host.

When Jane was asked to sponsor the FFSC Safety boat; Carl Giles, it was a no-brainer.

Jane said; “Here at Billie Box we are proud to support the FFSC, and hope to be able to continue our support for many years to come.”

If you would like to know more about FFSC and find out how to get involved, then please drop in and have a chat with one of the committee members or visit their website. The club is open Wednesday & Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays from Midday to 5pm.
