Clare’s volunteering day with the Suffolk Wildlife Trust

Last Updated on April 1, 2025

The Suffolk Wildlife Trust is a local charity that is dedicated to safeguarding Suffolk’s wildlife and countryside.  They manage nature reserves in the county, protecting wildlife and plants for future generations.

Billie Box Ltd supports the Suffolk Wildlife Trust and has very kindly given Clare a day release per month in order to volunteer and help to maintain the meadows and marshes in the area.

Clare’s first visit with them took place on Thursday, 27th March 25.  They met at Foxburrow Farm nature reserve and were taken over to Mickfield Meadow Nature Reserve, which is located near Stowmarket, in Suffolk.  This nature reserve is a stunning flower-rich hay meadow which houses a host of wildflowers, many of which are now scarce in Suffolk.  Fritillaria and Goldilocks Buttercups to name a couple.

Late last year the hedges had been trimmed and coppiced in order to encourage growth and provide a dense hedge for wildlife to make their home.  The branches and twigs had been collected up and left on the meadow over winter and their job was to chip them up and put them back onto the land under the hedge as mulch.  With the help of a tractor, a very large chipper and 6 other volunteers, they managed to clear all the debris in a few hours.

Following on from this next month, it will be their job to count the Fritillaries on the meadow to ensure the plants are surviving and continue to flourish in this area for years to come.

Clare said: “It was a pleasure to help the charity with this maintenance and I look forward to my day volunteering in April”.

We say: “Well done Clare and keep up the good work”.
